The bathroom: a variety of lighting
It often happens that the bathroom is low on the priority list - compared to other rooms in the house - when it comes to lighting. But bathrooms are growing in size and play a more important role in our daily lives. The right lighting is therefore important to get the most out of the room.
A bathroom often has different functions. On the one hand, it serves as a relaxation room for beauty rituals, a bath or a long shower session. But it is also the place where we brush our teeth, shave, model our hair, apply makeup and sometimes even read the newspaper. You not only want to create an atmosphere but also have functional light, for example at the mirror (s). To start, you can look at the types of lighting.
General lighting
First of all, there is general lighting or basic lighting. This is the lighting that is connected to the main switch. This lighting is intended to illuminate the entire bathroom and serves primarily to provide good visibility. This is usually done with a number of recessed spotlights or a central fixture. When applying it is important that you avoid not looking directly at the light in certain places. So a spot or main fixture should not hang exactly above your head in the bath or shower.
Task lighting
Task lighting is especially needed above the sink. Here we perform various tasks that require light, such as applying makeup and shaving. It is good to fit at least two recessed spotlights symmetrically next to, above or on the mirror, one of which is placed on the left and the other on the right of the face. This way you can see both sides of your face and there are no unwanted shadows.
Atmospheric lighting
In recent years we have spent more and more time in the bathroom. We consider the space as our personal wellness resort, where we take the time to relax and perform matching beauty rituals. To create such an atmosphere, you need mood lighting or accent lighting. The light intensity of mood lighting is generally less strong than that of general lighting. Ambient lighting includes, for example, recessed lights above the front and rear of the bath, above the shower and LED strips. For example, LED strips in the bathroom can be placed under the mirror, floating cupboards under the sink or the bathtub.
Other tips for bathroom lighting:
- Pay attention to safety: The bathroom is a damp room, some areas a little more than the others. To prevent defects and dangerous situations, you must, therefore, ensure that a spot or fixture has a certain IP value. This value determines to what extent an electrical device is resistant to moisture and dust. For LED recessed spots for applications in damp rooms, spots must have an IP44 rating. With this rating, the fixture is splash-proof.
- Add dimmers: you don't need mood lighting for a quick shower or brushing your teeth. But it is very nice if you are in the bathroom for a little longer, for example, to take a full bath. To be flexible in your lighting and to adjust it to your needs, good (LED) dimmers are indispensable.
- Choose LED lighting: LED is not only a good choice when it comes to saving energy but also because of its specific properties. LED lighting does not get warm and is moisture-resistant. As a result, they are less likely to break. LED lights are nowadays available in many different colors and can also be dimmed.
- Do not exaggerate but do not do too little: It is not a good idea to install dozens of spotlights and fixtures for fear that the bathroom would otherwise not be well lit. An abundance of light only makes your bathroom less uncomfortable and smaller. However, too little lighting is not desirable either. To create a good balance, it is first of all important to take a good look at the (size of) the room. And here too: dimmers are important.
